WHY CLEAN SEAS MATTER
Clean seas are not just beautiful — they are essential.
It starts here, with understanding that the ocean is not separate from us, but part of everything we depend on: from the air we breathe to the climate we live in.
Healthy Seas, Healthy Life
Our seas are home to an extraordinary diversity of marine life. Coral reefs, kelp forests, plankton, fish, and whales — these ecosystems support the food chain, balance our climate, and inspire wonder.
When our seas are polluted, the entire marine web suffers — and so do we.
Carbon & Climate
The ocean is one of the largest carbon sinks on the planet. Healthy marine systems; especially seagrass, mangroves, and saltmarsh absorb and store vast amounts of carbon.
But when polluted, degraded or acidified, the ocean loses its power to buffer us from climate chaos.
The Water Cycle
The sea is the engine of the water cycle. It evaporates, condenses, rains, flows and returns, carrying life with it. When the ocean is clean, the entire cycle is balanced and stable. When it’s polluted, those impacts ripple through rivers, soils, and skies.
Human Health
Clean seas mean clean food, safe water, and thriving coastal communities. Polluted waters can spread illness, contaminate seafood, and harm livelihoods. A healthy sea protects human health on every level, physical, mental and social.
Interconnected & Urgent
From climate to culture, biodiversity to wellbeing; clean seas are not a nice-to-have. They are a need-to-protect.
Cleaner Seas Project exists because ocean health is community health, climate health, and planetary health. And because every action we take, no matter how small, has the power to protect what matters.
Cleaner seas start where you are.
Whether you're a school, business, governmental body, local group or individual, there’s a place for you in this movement.
Take action, tell your story, fund a project or host an event. Start small, start big… JUST START.
